Charity Quilts

Charity Quilts – 2023

The Community Project Chairperson is responsible for the selection of the recipient charities which is subject to the board and/or membership approval, and will serve as liaison and contact person with the charities. One of our main purposes will be to raise childhood cancer awareness.

The Community Project Chairperson will maintain and update a record of quilts donated by the members throughout the year. In order to receive credit, members will turn in their donated quilts to the Community Project Chairperson or committee and may indicate which guild supported charity the quilt was made for.

Labels identifying that the quilts were made by Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon will be sewn on the back of our charity quilts.

We are making quilts for:

St. Joseph’s Hospital South and St Joseph’s Women’s Hospital

NICU quilts are 39”x 39” (after they are quilted, bound, and washed) as required by the hospital. It is suggested that you make the quilt 40” by 40” so that after quilting and washing, it will be closer to the required size.

Joshua House
Lap size quilts are:  42 inches by 42 inches
Twin size quilts are:  42 inches by 72 inches

Joshua House has 5 Houses:

  • One is for boys under the age of 12
  • Two are or boys ages 12-17
  • Two are for girls ages 12-17

Remember the ages of the children run from newborn to teenagers.

Things to remember when making your quilt for children:

  • Do not use micro filament thread to quilt
  • Remember to use bright color or kid theme printed fabric of cotton or flannel
  • NICU prefers the quilt to be quilted not tied but will accept those that are tied
  • Make sure binding is fully attached on both sides of the quilt

Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF)
QOVF quilts are:  no smaller than 55 inches by 65 inches and no larger than 72 inches by 90 inches, or
36 inches by 50 inches, for wheelchairs

For rules on QOVF quilts refer to their web site:

http://www.qovf.org/

Before handing in your quilt, please wash them in detergent that is Free of Dyes and Perfumes. Make sure your quilt is free of loose and end threads.

Audrey Gantous Memorial Project – Blessing Bags

Blessing Bags, are for the foster and at-risk children at Joshua House. Each year almost 300 children need a way to transport and secure their belongings as they transition to and from one living situation to another. As a guild, we want to remember Audrey by honoring her generous spirit and helping disadvantaged youngsters. This is not a guild obligation, but your time and talent would be greatly appreciated by so many!
